Self Portrait--Arcimboldo by Melaninny Self Portrait--Arcimboldo by Melaninny
I don't even know where to start with this one.

For my drawing class last semester we did a self portrait a week in different styles.

This one was the craziest, and the most fun. A self portrait in the style of Arcimboldo. If you don't know of him, here's a link!: [link] He was a 16th century artist who is now considered to be waaay ahead of his time, preceding the Surrealists by a few hundred years. =P

When I first heard we had to do a self portrait out of other objects, for some reason my mind immediately jumped to rats and caterpillars. xD So that's what this is. =P It took me ages. Though there are things I think could be fixed, I'm really happy with it. My professor really liked it, too.

The reactions to this tend to be, "That's disgusting!" xD That's okay though, I guess!
I'll stop gushing now.

My first reaction was "that is fucking weird," hahahahaha. But in a good way, trust me, because I found myself staring at each rat, each critter, than taking a step back to see the whole picture. I think that Italian painter fellow must have been on some lovely drugs, but probably wanted to create a similar effect in the viewers. Who knows though what those renaissance guys thing? "I hope no one dumps their chamber pot on me today."

Haha, I totally understand that reaction. xD I'm glad at least it was in a good way!

I don't know what was going on with Arcimboldo! I guess back in the day most people thought his art was garbage. Perhaps it was the fumes from all the chamber pots, and not drugs. = P

They probably did...religious paintings were all the rage, even though artists tried to express themselves through that stagnant subject matter. Someone going "all out" in expression was just too much for the times. I guess. xD

I had totally forgotten Arcimboldo till I checked out the link (I had seen "Summer" before, the rest were new to me), but I think you channeled his work great!
Love the detail, and the pastels add a softness that works well for the piece.
